Application Filing Recommendations

Processing Dates

These processing dates are based on U.S. Embassy visa application processing times, security requirements, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) processing times, and DHS reporting requirements for F-1 students. Oakland Community College cannot guarantee Department of State or Department of Homeland Security processing of visa applications or change of status petitions in a timely manner. These dates are also based on OCC registration schedules and anticipated enrollment.

Transfer Applicants

Students attending other U.S. schools, who seek to transfer to OCC, must apply and complete all forms/requirements/documents by December 15, 2017.  Transfer is dependent on the student being able to register for 12 credits, and later application means fewer available classes.

Applicants Seeking Change of Status from another Non-Immigrant Status to F-1

Timing of change of status applications to DHS depends on the student's current status and its expiration. DHS processing times can take  6 months or more and B-1/B-2 status students cannot enroll until COS applications are approved.  There are other status change requests where the student should begin attendance the first semester after application.  Along with I-20 issuance, students should meet with an immigration attorney for change of status application to DHS.
